A Note to Highmore on Insurance Claims
It's been a hard few days for a lot of families here, and dealing with insurance on top of storm damage is its own kind of stress.
Adjusters have a complicated job, and it's not always easy to follow what they're doing from the outside, so if something feels slow or confusing, that doesn't necessarily mean anything's wrong. Every policy is different too, so if you're not sure what yours covers, don't guess. Call your agent or carrier and ask. It's fine to ask more than once until it makes sense.
A few coverages worth checking on:
Dwelling coverage: fixes or rebuilds your house
Other structures: garages, sheds, barns, fences
Loss of use: helps pay for a place to stay if your home isn't livable
Roof coverage: roofs sometimes work differently than the rest of the policy
Wind/hail deductible: can work differently than your regular deductible
Debris removal: helps cover clearing fallen trees or storm debris
The South Dakota Division of Insurance has a helpful one-page guide on what to do after a disaster:
dlr.sd.gov/insurance/general_guidance/when_disaster_strikes_onepgr.pdf
If you feel like your claim isn't being handled right, call the Division at 605-773-3563.
Take care of each other, and keep asking questions until you get answers.

As July settles in, it is a natural time to embrace what this season does best: Invite us to slow down.
Rest is not the absence of productivity but a key part of what makes it sustainable. Whether you indulge in a quiet moment outside, a slower morning, or any other sort of small break, those moments are not wasted — they are worthwhile.
As we move through this month, what is one way you are allowing yourself to rest and recharge this summer? Feel free to share it in the comments. We would love to hear what that looks like for you.
